1919 —1999 Gen. I · František Bonuš
Generation one · Prof. František Bonuš

The professor who took Czech dance to California.

Master teacher · Prague Conservatory · author of the standard Czech folk-dance repertoire.

In 1979, Professor Bonuš taught at Stockton Folk Dance Camp and at the Santa Barbara Folk Dance Conference. His choreographies — Furiant, Beseda Quadrille, Čardáš — are still on the floor in American folk clubs today.

In the late 1970s, together with his son Jasan, he introduced American country dance into socialist Czechoslovakia. Under hostile conditions. And kept teaching it.

Generation two · Jasan & Jitka Bonušová

The son who stayed. The wife who kept teaching.

Founder & director (Jasan, †) · co-director today (Jitka) · FAMU graduate · danced in František's ensemble Beseda.

Jasan founded Dvorana in 1978, twenty years into Soviet-aligned rule. The ensemble grew into an accredited arts programme, affiliated with ZUŠ Music Art since 1998.

Jitka was the first person to perform American clogging on a Czech stage. She has taught in the US, Japan, Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, and Switzerland. She still organises the festival every autumn.

The Country Dance Festival Jasana Bonuše has run every year since 1993 — thirty years of American and Czech dancers on the same floor.

"We ran our first festival six months before the CDs replaced the cassettes." — Jitka, on 1993

The Country Dance and Song Society lists the 2026 tour on its official calendar.

Direct institutional endorsement from the major American organisation in this tradition.

Forty-seven years after František taught at Stockton, his grandson-in-law leads a tour that ends at the festival named after his son. On the floor: American dancers, Czech dancers — two traditions that long ago decided they belonged together.

From past travellers

What comes back from people who've been.

The tour was perfectly organized, thoughtfully explained, and beautifully done. Dvorana made good use of our bus time by educating us about the history of countries we visited.

I cannot imagine a better conceived or executed tour. It was everything it was cracked up to be.

I just want to thank you again for such a great trip. I had a wonderful time, and I appreciated your knowledge and kindness and humor. You were so helpful on the hikes and in so many other ways.

Q.01 Is this a dance tour, a cultural tour, or both?

Both. The flagship 2026 Country Dance Tour is hosted by a dance family and ends at a dance festival — but only three or four of the twelve days are dance-focused. The rest is Czech cultural travel: Prague, castles, villages, breweries, spa towns, UNESCO sites. About a third of our travellers are not dancers at all. Private tours can be built around any of our nine themes without dance at the centre.

ScopePractical
Q.02 What does the $3,000 price include — and exclude?

Included (land only): eleven nights three- and four-star hotels, all breakfasts, eight dinners, group lunches on transit days, private small-vehicle transport, owner-led English guiding throughout, all entry fees and guided tours, three-day Festival Jasana Bonuše pass.

Excluded: flights to/from Prague, travel insurance, some lunches and dinners on free-time days, personal spending, optional single-room supplement.

PricingInclusions
Q.03 How physically demanding is the tour?

Moderate. Expect cobblestones in Prague and in Český Krumlov, uneven paths to castle ruins, and optional light hiking on two or three days. No long hikes, no forced marches. Travellers in their seventies do this tour regularly. If mobility is a concern, email us first — we'll talk honestly about fit.

PracticalFitness
Q.04 Is there a single-room option? Any supplement?

Yes, on request. The single supplement typically runs between $600 and $900 for the twelve nights depending on which hotels are available. We quote it individually once you inquire.

PricingAccommodation
Q.05 Do I need to know how to dance?

No. The dance evenings on the tour (Oybin night four, the Květuš farm evening, the festival) are open to complete beginners. Jan and Bev teach what's needed. If you've never contra-danced in your life, you'll be on the floor by the first evening. If you've been calling for thirty years, you'll be on the other side of the hall.

ExperienceDance
Q.06 How do I book? How firm is the price and date?

Request info via the form below. Jan or Jitka reply personally within two business days. If it looks like a fit, we send a full itinerary and practical notes; a 30% deposit holds your seat. Final balance is due 60 days before departure. The 30 Sep — 12 Oct 2026 dates and the $3,000 price are fixed for 2026.

BookingPricing
Q.07 Cancellation and refund policy?

Deposits are refundable up to 90 days before departure, minus a small administrative fee. From 90 to 60 days, 50% refundable. Inside 60 days, non-refundable — which is why we strongly recommend travel insurance. Full written terms accompany the itinerary.
